Today, everyone needs a headshot….
If you run your own business, you need a headshot.
If you write a blog, you need a headshot.
If you are simply on Facebook – you need a headshot…
And no, that photo you cropped with some random person’s hand resting on your should DOES NOT COUNT. Or an image of you at a party with a drink in your hand. Or a blurry iPhone photo. None of these will allow you to be taken seriously. Professional headshots are a must-have in today’s social media driven society.
And please, it would be better to have NO photo than to have a “selfie” (you know, when you hold the phone up over your head). I beg of you, please don’t.
Its one thing to simply take a nice photo and put it on your profile, its another thing to have that photo truly represent who you are.
Your style, personality and even your passion can shine through a great headshot. Headshots have evolved from the usual studio set up – a couple of lights, white background and a stool. There is a still a need for these types of images (i.e. if you need a white background to match your site or for corporate consistency), but if you are a creative professional, it pays to make the investment and work with someone who can capture your personality and style. Environmental portraits take headshots to the next level. Being photographed in an interesting environment can add depth and detail to your image. An urban environment can communicate an edgy vibe, while shooting in a field would work well if your style or business is more “organic” or natural.
Yes, a professional headshot can be a significant investment. Most photographers can take a good portrait, but if you are running a business that is based in style, creativity, or is based on “you” as a personality – you might need to invest in more than just a basic photo. International speaker Neen James and Australian stylist Jenni Sellan commissioned me to take their lifestyle based headshots. Not only was this a fun experience, but it was massively productive for their respective businesses. Neen needed to update her “standard” headshot that she needed for her speaking engagements, but she also needed images for her site and social media that she could use to communicate her over-the-top energy, amazing wit and fun-filled style. Neen is one of the most dynamic people I’ve met, period. These images are just a sample of what we captured:
